The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been advancing an initiative called the “J-Startup” program, aiming to produce internationally competitive and winning startups and encourage them to provide new value to the rest of the world through their innovative technologies and business models. METI hereby announces that it will deploy new regional initiatives under the program in collaboration with municipalities which are proactive in building startup ecosystems.
1. Outline of regional initiatives to be deployed under the program
In deploying regional initiatives under the J-Startup program, regional secretariats of the respective initiatives under the program, which mainly consist of municipalities which are proactive in building startup ecosystems, will select promising regional-based startups, and then public organizations and private companies will collaboratively provide selected startups with intensive support measures. Through this approach, METI will strive to encourage selected startups to achieve dramatic growth. Moreover, these regional initiatives will be deployed in coordination not only with the J-Startup program, but also with the Project for Building Startup Ecosystem Bases advanced by the Cabinet Office, in order to further fortify startup ecosystems in various regions.
2. Participating municipalities
J-Startup HOKKAIDO: Sapporo City
J-Startup TOHOKU: Sendai City
J-Startup KANSAI: Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto City, Osaka Prefecture, Osaka City, Sakai City, Hyogo Prefecture and Kobe City
4. Future prospects
Under the program, the regional secretariats of the respective initiatives will exercise leadership in selecting promising startups.
Along with this, METI has opened a call for applicant companies to become supporters of these regional initiatives under the program, who are willing to assist selected startups and help advance collaboration between such startups and municipalities.
