August 7, 2020
【Updated on May 31, 2022】Please refer to the TeCOT portal site for details on updates to this release.
In cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) decided to create a mechanism (through the PCR Test Center for People Leaving Japan) to enable business travelers who tested negative through a PCR test at a clinic or other medical facility to promptly obtain a certificate from that clinic or other medical facility to prove that they received a test satisfying the requirements of respective countries.
METI published the results of the first round of applications from medical institutions that intend to register with the Center and issue certificates for the results of PCR tests s., and also started to accept applications for the second round from August 7, 2020.
1. PCR Test Center for People Leaving Japan
In cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, METI plans to establish a PCR Test Center for People Leaving Japan,* which will enable business travelers to easily and promptly make appointments for PCR tests at medical institutions (medical treatment that is not covered by the Public Health Insurance) and obtain a certificate to prove that they tested negative (medical institutions that would participate in this mechanism are to be publicly recruited).
* Deliberations will also be conducted regarding the feasibility of issuing digital certificates and introducing requirements for certification that differ for each country.
2. Results of the first round of applications
In response to the call for medical institutions to participate in the Center and issue test certificates for business travelers (first round: from July 27 to July 31), applications were filed as follows. Medical institutions that have filed an application are provisionally registered and will be officially registered after going through the prescribed procedures, such as agreeing to the operational rules (under preparation).
Number of applications: from 146 medical institutions in total
Number of tests (sampling) available: around 2,200 cases per day (nationwide on weekdays)
