The FY2020 Survey on Health and Productivity Management to be Held for the 2021 Health & Productivity Stock Selection and the 2021 Certified Health & Productivity Management Organizations Recognition Program (Large Enterprise Category)

Following on from FY2019, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) will jointly select outstanding listed enterprises engaging in a health and productivity management program in which enterprises focus on and strategically carry out efforts with regard to their employees’ health from a management perspective, in principle, on a one-company per industry basis, under the 2021 Health & Productivity Stock Selection.

In addition, the Nippon Kenko Kaigi* will conduct a program titled “The 2021 Certified Health & Productivity Management Organizations Recognition Program (Large Enterprise Category).”** Under this program, large enterprises, not limited to listed enterprises, will be selected and recognized for their outstanding health and productivity management practices undertaken in collaboration with insurers.

Prior to these efforts, METI will send a questionnaire sheet for the FY2020 Survey on Health and Productivity Management on August 24, 2020, to enterprises and publicize the survey for the purpose of ascertaining and analyzing the current progress of and changes over years in enterprises’ health and productivity management practices.

*1. The Nippon Kenko Kaigi is an organization aiming to encourage workplaces and communities to achieve specific measures to overcome health-related challenges under collaboration among private organizations, e.g., economic associations, medical-care associations and insurers, and municipalities.
**2. METI will recognize the top 500 large enterprises as the “White 500” enterprises, which are to be selected from the large enterprises certified under the 2021 Certified Health & Productivity Management Organizations Recognition Program (Large Enterprise Category) based on the results of the Survey on Health and Productivity Management.

1. Outline of the health and productivity management

“Health and Productivity Management” is a management approach in which enterprises focus on and strategically carry out efforts with regard to their employees’ health from a management perspective. It is anticipated that an enterprise’s investment in health conscious activities for employees based on its corporate philosophies contributes to encouraging the vitality of employees, enhancing productivity and other organizational vitalization, thereby leading to an improvement in performance or stock prices as a result.

2. Outline of the Health & Productivity Stock Selection and the Certified Health & Productivity Management Organizations Recognition Program (Large Enterprise Category)

Aiming to promote enterprise efforts for health and productivity management, METI and TSE will select exceptional TSE-listed enterprises that are engaged in health and productivity management under the 2021 Health & Productivity Stock Selection, and present such outstanding enterprises to investors as attractive investment options. In addition, the Nippon Kenko Kaigi will conduct a program titled “The 2021 Certified Health & Productivity Management Organizations Recognition Program (Large Enterprise Category). Under this program, large enterprises, not limited to listed enterprises, will be recognized for their outstanding health and productivity management practices undertaken in collaboration with insurers.

3. Utilization of the survey results

The results of the FY2020 Survey on Health and Productivity Management which will be conducted by METI (subcontracted to Nikkei Research Inc.), will be utilized in selecting outstanding enterprises under the Health & Productivity Stock Selection and in recognizing outstanding enterprises under the Certified Health & Productivity Management Organizations Recognition Program (Large Enterprise Category) . Furthermore, METI will send a summary of the evaluation results to all enterprises and associations that have answered questions, which describes the level of each enterprise in health and productivity management, points that each enterprise needs to review and other data, and such data is expected to help the respective enterprises promote their efforts for health and productivity management.

Period of the survey

From August 24 (Mon.) to October 16 (Fri.), 2020

Period of sending the summary of the evaluation results and accepting applications for the 2021 Certified Health & Productivity Management Organizations Recognition Program (Large Enterprise Category)

Scheduled to be around late November to early December 2020.

Announcement of selected and recognized enterprises

Scheduled to be around March 2021.
