New Municipalities Selected for Promotion of Creating Space Business

- Effort under the Space New Economy Creation Network (S-NET) Project -

September 7, 2020

As part of the activities for the Space New Economy Creation Network (S-NET) project, the Cabinet Office (CAO) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) newly selected Fukuoka Prefecture and Oita Prefecture as “Municipalities for Promoting Creation of Space Business,” which are municipalities taking initiatives in the creation of space business and proactively promoting them through taking advantage of satellite and other data.

1. Outline of the S-NET project

In March 2016, CAO and METI inaugurated an S-NET project in order to facilitate collaboration among companies, individuals, associations and other entities which are interested in the creation of new industries and services focusing on “space” as a keyword.

2. Outline of Municipalities for Promoting Creation of Space Business

As part of the activities for the S-NET project, CAO and METI decided to recognize municipalities that are taking initiatives in the creation of space business through the active promotion of satellite and other data. The goal is for these municipalities to become “Municipalities for Promoting Creation of Space Business, aiming to accelerate autonomous creation of space business in regional areas”. The selections made in August 2018 were Hokkaido, Ibaraki, Fukui and Yamaguchi Prefectures.

Against this backdrop, CAO and METI opened a call for applicants from municipalities from July 1 (Wed.) to August 7 (Fri.), 2020, and, as a result, newly selected Fukuoka and Oita Prefectures as Municipalities for Promoting Creation of Space Business.

CAO and METI will proactively support these selected municipalities in advancing their efforts for creating space business in their regions. Such municipalities should take initiatives through support programs for: providing them such opportunities hosted by the government as seminars and lectures by dispatched officials or fostering coordinators for space business.
