“Register of Medical Institutions Issuing COVID-19 Testing Certificates” for Overseas Travelers to be Updated
October 14, 2020
【Updated on May 31, 2022】Please refer to the TeCOT portal site for details on updates to this release.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will update the “Register of Medical Institutions Issuing COVID-19 Testing Certificates” (hereinafter referred to as the “register”). The register shows medical institutions that have been registered based on their filing of applications (currently targeting those filed on or before October 9 (Fri.), 2020) and are therefore allowed to issue a Certificate of a Negative Result of a Test Concerning the Novel Coronavirus Disease for overseas travelers.
The number of medical institutions registered in the register has come to 429 across Japan, and this allows medical institutions to conduct about 13,000 medical tests a day (on weekdays).
1. Outline of the register for overseas travelers
On September 4 (Fri.), 2020, METI and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) began accepting applications from medical institutions for official registration as institutions that are authorized to issue a Certificate of a Negative Result of a Test Concerning the Novel Coronavirus Disease for overseas travelers. In response, they examined the applications received on or before October 9 (Fri.), 2020, in accordance with the predetermined criteria (*1) that METI and MHLW set. As a result of the examination, they registered 429 medical institutions in the register (*2) prepared by the government. The register has also been published on the TeCOT website (*3). Moreover, the register will be shared with overseas governments if requested in order to allow business travelers and others to smoothly enter their destination countries.

2. Current situations of registered medical institutions in each region
For the current situations of registered medical institutions in each region, see Note 4 below. 429 medical institutions across Japan have now been registered in the register, and this allows medical institutions to conduct about 13,000 medical tests a day (on weekdays), including medical institutions that usually do not accept visits from the public, e.g., internal clinics of private companies.
Note:
3. Applications for registration
METI and MHLW are continually accepting applications from medical institutions to join the register. The register will be published occasionally after qualified medical institutions have been added. As for the next round of the call, they will publicize successful medical institutions on October 30 (Wed.), 2020, if such institutions file an application on or before October 23 (Fri.), 2020.
