JPO Announces New Web-Based Application “Smooth Document Preparer” - Supporting Users in Preparation of Applications and Other Documents
December 18, 2020
On December 17 (Thur.), 2020, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) started the provision of a new application named “Smooth Document Preparer.” The new application supports individual and SME users in their preparation of applications and other documents. This application is browser-based and requires no downloads of any software. All necessary information for applications, payments, and other documents can be simply entered into the application via a browser.
Adobe Systems Incorporated will stop the provision of its Adobe Flash Player* service at the end of December 2020. The JPO’s “Easy Application Preparer”, which utilized Adobe Flash Player, was available to users in their preparation of applications and other documents. The new “Smooth Document Preparer” application has now replaced its predecessor.
*Note: “Adobe Flash Player” is a trademark or registered trademark owned by Adobe Systems Incorporated in the United States and other countries.
2. Overview of the new “Smooth Document Preparer”
The previous “Easy Application Preparer” required users to download specific software before use. By contrast, “Smooth Document Preparer” allows users to make use of services online. Conventional burdens such as downloading, installation, and prior registration of necessary information (e.g., applicants and inventors) have been removed thanks to the new web-based application. Even first-time users will find the new system easy to use.
It also provides a service for preparing forms for payment of patent fees, registration fees for designs and registration fees for trademarks.
