Services of COVID-19 Testing Center for Overseas Travelers (TeCOT) Become Available to Overseas Travelers with Purpose Other than Business Travel

The COVID-19 Testing Center for Overseas Travelers (TeCOT) is a system in which the government supports business travelers in receiving services for smoothly obtaining a certification for a negative result of a medical test concerning the novel coronavirus disease, a document necessary for entering their destination countries or other purposes. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) hereby announces thatTeCOT has started a service of issuing IDs for overseas travelers with purposes other than business travel, such as students who will study overseas. Moreover, METI opened a new website for TeCOT from the viewpoint of enhancing TeCOT’s usability.

1. Outline of TeCOT

Since October 8 (Thur.), 2020, METI, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), has been operating TeCOT as a system in which overseas business travelers are able to locate and make a reservation at a desired medical institution which provides a medical test for the novel coronavirus disease and issues a certification for a negative result of the test in a manner tailored to requests from their destination countries.

2. Outline of TeCOT’s services available for overseas travelers with purposes other than business travel, e.g., students who will study abroad

From 13:00, December 21, 2020, overseas travelers with purposes other than business travel, e.g., students who will study abroad, have become eligible to make a reservation at a desired medical institution through TeCOT. Please note that before using TeCOT, travelers are required to complete prior registration to obtain an ID through the new website for TeCOT. This registration requires input of your “name,” “address,” “telephone number,” “email address” and “birthday.” The ID will be issued immediately when you have completed the registration, in principle. For details of this procedure, see the manual published on the TeCOT website as part of the METI website(In Japanese）.

Notes:
  1. Access to TeCOT may be limited to those traveling for non-business purposes depending on the situations of quotas for reservations since overseas business travelers are prioritized.
  2. Travel agencies, e.g., tourist agencies, and other businesses are permitted to make reservations at desired medical institutions for overseas business travelers through TeCOT.

3. Opening of a new website for TeCOT

At 13:00, December 21, 2020, METI opened a new website exclusively for TeCOT. The conventional TeCOT website as part of the METI website is scheduled to be run for a while in order to avoid confusion among users.
