Mr. Kajiyama Hiroshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, granted certificates of gratitude to 299 companies and associations for their great contributions to stabilizing people’s daily lives amid the pandemic of the novel coronavirus disease by their urgent increase in production of medical supplies in response to METI’s requests and other calls to improve demand and supply. On December 21, 2020, a commendation ceremony was held in METI to grant the certificates to nine representatives of these contributors.
1. Curbing expansion of the novel coronavirus disease in the early spring of 2020
In the early spring of 2020, the period when the novel coronavirus disease was rapidly expanding, the government of Japan made a request to companies and associations to increase production of medical face masks, antiseptics, medical isolation gowns, face shields, medical gloves, artificial respirators and other medical supplies which are essential for preventing the disease. In response, related industries cooperated in increasing the production of such supplies and this contributed to containing expansion of the disease and curbing social confusion to the minimum extent possible.
2. Taking measures against simultaneous epidemics of the disease and seasonal influenza
Nevertheless, since the last month, the expansion of the disease has remained at a high level. The government has been taking maximum measures in order to contain further expansion during the period of the year-end and New Year and to help the public spend their daily lives next year in a calm manner. As winter has come, Japan will have to simultaneously address the COVID-19 disease and seasonal influenza, a situation that it has never occurred before. Companies and associations have been providing cooperation in smooth supply of thermometers, Avigan tablets, vaccines, kits for quantitative antigen tests and other medical supplies necessary for prevention and remedy.

Minister Kajiyama granted certificates of gratitude to 299 companies and associations for their contributions to increasing the production of medical supplies as mentioned above.
