Study Group on Solving Challenges in Digital Markets and Developing Infrastructures for Next-Generation Transaction Compiles Report “Discussion Paper on Digital Markets - For Solving Social Challenges and Achieving Economic Growth by Transition of Industrial Structures -”

January 8, 2021

Aiming to propose the importance of digital markets and points of contention to further be discussed to realize such markets, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) held meetings of the Study Group on Solving Challenges in Digital Markets and Developing Infrastructures for Next-Generation Transaction from November 2020 and hereby releases a report as an outcome of meeting discussions.

1. Background

In October 2020, METI inaugurated a Council on Development of Infrastructures for Digital Markets for Realization of Society 5.0 and started discussions on policies for future development of infrastructures for digital markets in order to bring together expert knowledge of the public and private sectors.

At the meetings of the council, participants pointed out “optimization of the flows of people, goods and information” as an example of future directions of efforts for developing infrastructures for digital markets that facilitate the transition of industrial structures.

In response, METI held meetings of the “Study Group on Solving Challenges in Digital Markets and Developing Infrastructures for Next-Generation Transaction” from November 2020, and compiled a report titled “Discussion Paper on Digital Markets - For Solving Social Challenges and Achieving Economic Growth by Transition of Industrial Structures -” based on opinions offered by experts.

METI expects that this discussion paper will work as a trigger for encouraging the industrial, government and academic sectors to hold wide-ranging discussions in more detail toward realization of digital markets, thereby leading to a variety of actions, including development of infrastructures for digital markets.
