Launching of Platform “J-Bridge” to Encourage Japanese Companies to Advance Open Innovation with Asia-based Startups and Other Businesses and Start of Member Registration
February 18, 2021
On February 18, 2021, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) inaugurated a business platform called “Japan Innovation Bridge (commonly called “J-Bridge”) under the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), aiming to support Japanese companies in collaborating and advancing M&A with overseas companies based mainly in Asia, including startups, through open innovation, and METI will start acceptance of applications for member registration. Moreover, a launching event of the platform will be held on February 24, 2021, commemorating the launching of the platform.
1. Background and purpose
As part of efforts for the Asia DX (digital transformation) Concept, METI has been supporting projects for encouraging Japanese companies to: collaborate with local companies in ASEAN economies and other countries, solve social challenges with digital technologies through such collaboration, and create new business models.
Meanwhile, METI recognizes that many Japanese companies are facing difficulties in finding ways of accessing or having opportunities for collaboration with ASEAN and other overseas companies, mainly startups, even though they are interested in such collaboration. In light of this situation, METI decided to launch J-Bridge under JETRO as a framework for bridging Japanese companies with local companies overseas.
2. Outline of J-Bridge
J-Bridge is a business platform for supporting Japanese companies in collaborating and advancing M&A with overseas companies through open innovation in six priority fields,* including startups dramatically growing mainly in the field of digital technologies in Asia and other regions and western companies having leading technologies in the field of carbon neutrality, such as offshore wind power generation. METI will provide member companies with information on promising startups and other businesses in target countries and regions in the priority fields and with hands-on support measures by dispatching coordinators from domestic and overseas bases to support such companies in accessing a variety of services ranging from individual-based, face-to-face consultation to project formation, including provision of information on demonstration of other projects. Moreover, member companies are eligible to network with other members on the members-only website.
Furthermore, even non-member companies are able to visit a portal website and watch online events for their reference.
