In February 2021, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) generated a progress report which describes the efforts of the governments of Japan and India for improvement of business environments in the Japan Industrial Townships (JITs) in India and achievements thereof. METI and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI), India, exchanged respective progress reports. The development and advancement of the JITs are expected to help further accelerate Japanese companies’ investment in India.

Overview of the exchange of progress reports

In February 2021, METI generated a progress report which describes the efforts of the governments of Japan and India for improvement of business environments in the JITs in India and achievements thereof. METI and MCI exchanged their respective progress reports. This is the fourth exchange of such progress reports.

Major progress since December 2019 (when the previous progress reports were exchanged) includes deployment of a variety of JETRO-led activities to attract companies to the JITs and three Japanese companies have moved into the three industrial parks even amid the severe global situation caused by the expansion of the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing the number of companies that have moved to the JITs to 107 as of February 2021.

The industrial parks in the respective states have been advancing development and improvement of public infrastructures and highways, facilitating one-stop services for issuing permissions and approvals, enhancing the single window clearance involving fortification and permissions and approvals involving infrastructures. (For details, see the Indian-side progress report.)

METI anticipates that in addition to advancing development of the JITs, utilization of JIM and JEC projects as efforts for fostering human resources in the manufacturing industry in India and that of government support measures, e.g., JETRO’s support measures involving investment counseling and convening of seminars, will further accelerate Japanese companies’ investment in India.

Outline of the JITs

In September 2014, Mr. Abe Shinzo, then-Prime Minister of Japan, and H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, announced the Japan-India Investment Promotion Partnership. As part of this partnership agreement, Japan decided to develop the JITs, an industrial zone in which Japanese companies are able to smoothly start and develop business in India.
