Convening of World’s Largest-Class Technology Conference “Web Summit Tokyo” Decided

Under the title “Web Summit Tokyo,” the world’s largest-class technology conference, was decided to be held in Tokyo in 2022, aiming to develop and fortify an ecosystem of startups in Japan, enhance Tokyo’s attractiveness as a base city for such ecosystem leading to the creation of new innovations.

1. Purpose

Under the title “Web Summit Tokyo,” the world’s largest-class technology conference, was decided to be held in Tokyo, as a brand new event, in 2022, aiming to develop and fortify an ecosystem of startups, enhance Tokyo’s attractiveness as a base city for such ecosystem leading to the creation of new innovations.

Preparations for convening the conference will be advanced in collaboration and cooperation between The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government while requesting cooperation from private companies.

Web Summit

“Web Summit” is a technology conference launched in Dublin, Ireland, in 2009. Its host city was changed to Lisbon, Portugal, in 2016, in response to invitation by the government of Portugal. The series of conferences has brought together about 100,000 people, including investors and representatives of startups, global enterprises and the media, from at least 170 countries. Since 2014, the Web Summit has been held globally, including “Collision” events in Toronto, Canada, and “RISE” events in Hong Kong.

Note: “Collision” and “RISE” : These are a series of regional events hosted by Web Summit.

2. Outline of the conference (tentative schedule)

Date: Will run for approximately three days in early September 2022
Venue: Main venue (Tokyo International Forum: 3-5-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo) and other venues

Note: Events are scheduled to be held in a hybrid form of physical and online sites.
