Preliminary Report of the 2020 Census of Manufacture Compiled

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) conducted the 2020 Census of Manufacture as of June 1, 2020. The census discovered that the total number of employees as of June 1, 2020, was 7,697,536 and the shipment value of manufactured products, etc. (*1) in 2019 was 322.1260 trillion yen (*2).
1. Targets of the survey
The census aims to identify the number of employees and the shipment value, etc. of manufactured products, targeting establishments that [i] belong to the manufacturing industry in Japan, which are classified in Division E of the Japan Standard Industrial Classification, excluding head offices and other equivalents not involved in manufacturing or processing, and [ii] have four or more employees.
2. Outline of the results (targeting establishments with four or more employees)
(1) Overall condition
As of June 1, 2020, there were 181,299 establishments, the aggregation target in the census, while the number of employees was 7,697,536.
In 2019, the product shipment value, etc. of the establishments in the manufacturing industry was 332.1260 trillion yen, while value added (*3) was 100.0650 trillion yen.
(2) Conditions by sector
Looking at the number of establishments by sector in the manufacturing industry, the fabricated metal products sector showed the highest (25,024 establishments), followed by the food production sector (23,542 establishments). As for changes in composition rates from the previous year, the fabricated metal products sector showed an increase of 0.2 percentage points, while the food production sector showed a decrease of 0.2 percentage points.
Looking at the number of employees by sector in the manufacturing industry, the food production sector showed the highest (1,132,189 employees), followed by the transportation equipment sector (1,063,373 employees). As for changes in composition rates from the previous year, the food production sector remained the same, while the transportation equipment sector showed a decrease of 0.3 percentage points.
Looking at the product shipment value, etc. of the establishments in the manufacturing industry, the transportation equipment sector showed the highest value (67.9692 trillion yen), followed by the food production sector (29.7716 trillion yen). As for changes in composition rates from the previous year, the transportation equipment sector remained the same, while the food production sector showed an increase of 0.2 percentage points.
Meanwhile, looking at the value added by sector in the manufacturing industry, the transportation equipment sector showed the highest value (16.7495 trillion yen), followed by the chemical and allied products sector (11.5118 trillion yen). As for changes in composition rates from the previous year, the transportation equipment sector showed a decrease of 0.9 percentage points, while the chemical and allied products sector showed an increase of 0.5 percentage points.

Note: The added value includes gross added value regarding establishments with 4 to 29 employees.
3. Future schedule of releasing the revised report
METI and MIC will release a summarized table of the industry-based census, in which major items of the census are aggregated, by May 2021. Following this, they will release a table of the industry-based census, a table of the product item-based census and a table of the region-based census in a sequential manner.
