Minister Kajiyama met with IAEA Director General Grossi

On April 14, 2021, Mr. Kajiyama Hiroshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a web-meeting with Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Minister Kajiyama held a web-meeting with IAEA Director General Grossi.
Minister Kajiyama expressed his gratitude for the IAEA’s support over the years, especially with regard to the decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS). He also explained Japan’s Basic Policy on Handling of ALPS Treated Water.
Furthermore, regarding ALPS treated water, he requested that the IAEA disseminate information on its current status and safety with the international community on the basis of scientific knowledge. Also, he made a formal request in the following areas: i) dispatch of review missions; ii) support to environmental monitoring; and iii) ensuring transparency towards the international community. He also stated that he would like to discuss with both sides and formulate specific cooperation details as soon as possible.
Director General Grossi welcomed the announcement of the Basic Policy, responded positively to the request made by Minister Kajiyama, and will cooperate and work together with Japan in a highly transparent manner in each stage of the process, before, during and after the discharge.
Both sides agreed to closely work together, to accelerate preparation including the IAEA missions.
