April 23, 2021
1. Characteristics of the 2021 White Paper on Small and Medium Enterprises in Japan and the 2021 White Paper on Small Enterprises in Japan
These 2021 White Papers (hereinafter referred to as the "reports") analyze the impact that the novel coronavirus disease (hereinafter referred to as "COVID-19") has had on SMEs and small enterprises in Japan. It also analyzes—as important approaches to overcoming this crisis—matters such as action taken by these enterprises regarding business review, digitalization, business succession, and M&A in light of the changes in the business environment. Throughout the reports, the analysis is presented together with an abundance of case examples.
2. Key points in the reports
Overview
Many SMEs continue to face tough circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is also important for the companies to see the changes in the business environment as opportunities for reengineering, and focus on the needs of customers and their own strengths.
Ability to overcome the crisis
The companies need to grasp their financial situations and develop management strategies that are aligned with the changes in the business environment.
In order to advance digitalization, it is important for management to get involved in organizational reforms such as reviewing business processes and cultivating a proactive organizational culture toward digitalization, and to promote these reforms throughout the company.
Many companies take on new opportunities under new management after business succession. This means business succession is also important for companies' growth and development. The public image of M&A—one of the approaches to business succession—is improving, and more companies are adopting it.
Changes in consumer attitudes and small enterprises' underlying strengths
There are also small businesses that are capturing new demand by shifting their attention to the changes in consumer attitudes and behavior brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Links with the local community and efforts toward SDGs contribute to the sustainable development of small enterprises.
Through support during the COVID-19 pandemic, people's expectations toward chambers and societies of commerce and industry are increasing.
