The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the European Commission (EC)'s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT) held a EU-Japan AI Workshop on monitoring AI systems on July 1 and 2. Government agencies, companies, and experts had discussions based on use cases of monitoring and evaluation of AI systems after the start of operations. The workshop was held as part of the activities of the EU-Japan AI Joint Committee,* a forum for dialog with the EC's DG CONNECT, the establishment of which was agreed upon during a meeting on July 17, 2020, between Minister Kajiyama and European Commissioner Breton.
At this workshop, participating government agencies, companies, and experts shared leading use cases of technologies that enable the detection of defects, the crediting, biometric authentications, and stable operation of AI systems, with a particular focus on monitoring AI systems’ operations. As representatives of Japan, Yokogawa Electric Corporation, NEC Corporation, Hitachi, Ltd., Merpay, Inc., and Fujitsu Limited provided use cases, and Mr. Oiwa Yutaka (Deputy Director of the Digital Architecture Research Center and Leader of Continuum Computer Trustworthiness Research Team, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology), Mr. Ikegai Naoto (Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Law, Hitotsubashi University), and Mr. Inatani Tatsuhiko (Professor at the Graduate School of Law, Kyoto University) led the discussions.
METI will further promote the understanding of AI system use cases based on the discussions in this workshop, and will continue to work with the EC to deepen mutual understanding of the appropriate forms for regulations applied to AI systems and to promote harmonizing of regulations through exchanging views.
