Minister Kajiyama Holds Meeting with H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, UAE

On July 8 (Thu.), 2021, Mr. Kajiyama Hiroshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), via video conference.
In the meeting, they discussed the cooperation between the two countries in the fields of hydrogen and ammonia, while also referring to the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on Fuel Ammonia and Carbon Recycling concluded between METI and ADNOC in January this year. Minister Kajiyama explained that Japan intends to support diverse and realistic energy transitions in Asia, including the clean use of fossil fuels. The ministers agreed that their countries would work closely together through the Asia Green Growth Partnership Ministerial Meeting scheduled for October and other opportunities.
After the meeting, Minister Kajiyama attended the signing ceremony of the Joint Study Agreement (JSA) on Fuel Ammonia* between Japanese companies and government agencies (INPEX, JERA, JOGMEC) and ADNOC. Concrete achievements of these projects is expected to accelerate the bilateral cooperation in the field of fuel ammonia in the future.
* Joint Study Agreement (JSA) on Fuel Ammonia
- This is an agreement signed between INPEX, JERA, JOGMEC, and ADNOC in preparation for launching a feasibility study (FS) for a project in which the four parties produce ammonia from natural gas in Abu Dhabi, employ enhanced oil recovery (EOR) to use CO2 generated in the course of production, and thereby transport to Japan low-carbon ammonia produced with reduced CO2 emissions.
- Its purpose is to confirm among the parties the schedule, cost sharing, and management system for conducting the FS.
