Applications Open for the 2022 Health & Productivity Stock Selection and the 2022 Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition Program

August 30, 2021

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is promoting "health and productivity management," whereby we think about employees' health and productivity management from a business-management perspective as one of the efforts toward achieving a healthy, long-lived society, and strategically implement initiatives that lead to health maintenance and promotion.

Today, METI opened the applications for the 2022 Health & Productivity Stock Selection and the 2022 Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition Program. In order to create an environment where health and productivity management is more appreciated and to expand its scope, the Survey on Health and Productivity Management contains new items starting from FY2021, including the promotion of information disclosure.

1. Growing interest in health and productivity management

The Survey on Health and Productivity Management started in FY2014, and increasing numbers of enterprises are responding to it annually (2,523 enterprises last fiscal year). With more than 80% of the stock selection companies that make up the Nikkei 225 now participating, many of the leading companies in each industry have begun to promote health and productivity management as part of their management strategy. "Health" comes under "S" ("Social") in ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) information. Thus, there is growing interest in how "health" is positioned in corporate management.

2. About the Survey on Health and Productivity Management

The Survey on Health and Productivity is a survey conducted with the aim of analyzing the health and productivity management efforts in enterprises and how they change over time, and obtaining basic information toward choosing the Health & Productivity Stock Selection and Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations (Large Enterprise Category).

<Key points of the FY2021 Survey>

In FY2021, the Survey on Health and Productivity Management was updated with the following new points in order to create an environment where health and productivity management is more appreciated, and to expand its scope.

  1. Promotion of information disclosure (making disclosure of the Survey on Health and Productivity Management's feedback sheets an essential requirement for White 500)
  2. Evaluation and analysis of business performance (whether or not the company measures its employees' performance and how)
  3. Expansion of scope (whether the company supports the health and productivity management efforts of its suppliers as well as its own, or contributes to society's health as a whole)

3. The Health & Productivity Stock Selection

In order to promote efforts toward health and productivity management, exceptional Tokyo Stock Exchange-listed enterprises that are engaged in health and productivity management are selected for the Health & Productivity Stock Selection, and presented to investors as attractive investment options.

They are evaluated based on their responses to the 2021 Survey on Health and Productivity Management.

4. About the Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition Program

This recognition program is designed by METI and conducted by Nippon Kenko Kaigi* with an aim to create an environment in which large enterprises and SMEs that are practicing health and productivity management are recognized by society.
