Minister Kajiyama Holds Video Conference with H.E. Mr. Nikolai Shulginov, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation, at Eastern Economic Forum -Joint Statement of Intent Signed

The Eastern Economic Forum is being held in Vladivostok, Russia from September 2 (Thu.) to 4 (Sat.) In connection with the forum, Mr. Kajiyama Hiroshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Minister for Economic Cooperation with Russia, held a video conference with H.E. Mr. Nikolai Shulginov, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation. The Japanese minister signed a Joint Statement of Intent on Sustainable Energy Cooperation, and delivered a greeting via a video message in a Japan-Russia Business Session.

1. Video conference with H.E. Mr. Nikolai Shulginov, Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation, and the signing ceremony of Joint Statement of Intent (September 2)

On September 2 (Thu.), Minister Kajiyama held a video conference with H.E. Mr. Nikolai Shulginov, Russian Minister of Energy. At the meeting, the two ministers agreed to promote new cooperation in the field of hydrogen, ammonia, and CCUS/Carbon Recycling in addition to cooperating in existing areas including hydrocarbon, energy efficiency and new energy, and nuclear energy. Expectations are growing for these new fields as sources of zero-emission fuels that will help achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. After the meeting, the leaders signed the Joint Statement of Intent between the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan and the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation on Cooperation in the Field of Sustainable Energy.

Furthermore, with a view toward promoting concrete cooperation between Japanese and Russian businesses, METI and Russian company Novatek signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on Hydrogen, Ammonia, CCS, and CCU/Carbon Recycling. In addition to this, METI plans to enter into agreements with other major Russian oil and gas companies in the future.

These cooperation agreements are expected to further accelerate energy cooperation between Japan and Russia.

2. Greeting via a video message in a Japan-Russia Business Session (September 3)

A Japan-Russia Business Session jointly organized by the Japan Association for Trade with Russia and NIS (ROTOBO), the Russian-Japanese Business Council, and Business Russia was held on September 3 (Fri.) within the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum. Representing the Japanese government, Minister Kajiyama delivered a greeting via a video message. He expressed the government's intention to advance concrete measures for Japan-Russia cooperation in the fields of energy, medical care, agriculture, and others in the Russian Far East. H.E. Mr. Maksim Reshetnikov, Russian Minister of Economic Development and Special Representative for Trade and Economic Cooperation with Japan, and Mr. Artem Dovlatov, Deputy Chairman of VEB.RU, also delivered a greeting via a video message, and business representatives from both Japan and Russia had lively discussions.
