The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (hereinafter referred to as "NEDO"), and SIGNATE Inc. (hereinafter referred to as "SIGNATE") will jointly hold the Fifth AI Edge Contest, with the aim of discovering outstanding computer technologies, human resources and ideas, as well as encouraging promising new human resources to enter these fields, for the purpose of creating innovative AI edge computing technology.
In this contest, contestants will focus on the subject of tracking objects in images during autonomous driving, implement AI algorithms on a RISC-V platform, and compete in terms of processing speed and ideas. Through the contest, the organizers will strive to encourage the contestants to master or further cultivate skills that are applicable to performing high-speed processing while maintaining accuracy even with limited resources (e.g., IoT devices), and will also endeavor to contribute to the spread of AI edge computing technology.
1. Purpose of the contest
With the arrival of IoT causing explosive growth in the amount of data generated in society, many industries have been demanding the establishment of AI edge computing technology (a technology in which high-level information processing with less power consumption is provided at the "edges" of a network, rather than processing all the data using cloud computing), in order to promote sophisticated utilization of the surging amount of data.
Against this backdrop, METI and NEDO have decided to hold the Fifth AI Edge Contest with the aim of discovering outstanding computer technologies, ideas and human resources who can play a leading role in implementing these technologies and ideas, as well as encouraging promising new human resources to enter these fields for the purpose of creating innovative AI edge computing technology.
Past AI Edge Contests focused on subjects such as "object detection" and "tracking target objects." In this the fifth contest, contestants will compete in terms of processing speed and ideas by creating AI algorithms and then implementing them on a RISC-V platform, with the theme of tracking objects in images during autonomous driving.
The judges will check for any rule violations or similar problems as well as the reproducibility of the outcomes, then based on the results, will conduct strict screening to choose the successful award winners. The organizers will then recognize the winners with an award and extra prizes.
