A Textile Industry Subcommittee Established and Held under the Industrial Structure Council to Discuss the Future Direction of the Textile Industry
November 15, 2021
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will establish a Textile Industry Subcommittee under the Industrial Structure Council to discuss the future direction of the textile industry. The Subcommittee will hold its first meeting on November 22.
As digital and sustainability developments in Japan and overseas affect industrial structures, it is important to address these structural transformations without delay.
Additionally in Japan, the acceleration of the population decline and the arrival of the 100-year lifespan era are expected to influence the approaches taken by many industries.
The growth of online consumption through widespread use of the Internet and smartphones and the interactive exchange of information via social media are also driving factors for new business creation.
In this environment, the textile industry in Japan has reached a major turning point. With the spread of COVID-19, sales of many textile industry-related companies have fallen, and consumer needs have changed based on the "New Normal."
On the other hand, novel business plans such as direct-to-consumer (DTC) have been increasing activity, and new markets such as smart textiles are gaining momentum.
In light of the changing industrial and social structures, the Textile Industry Subcommittee will be established under the Industrial Structure Council, and its first meeting will be held to discuss the future direction of the textile industry.
