Committee on New Direction of Economic and Industrial Policies Established in the Industrial Structure Council

November 16, 2021

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will establish the Committee on New Direction of Economic and Industrial Policies in the Industrial Structure Council to discuss future policies as the "New Direction of Economic and Industrial Policies." The first meeting will be held on November 19.

1. Purpose and background

Issues like the global COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, soaring energy prices, and conflicts between the United States and China have made the future increasingly uncertain, and the growth potential of the Japanese economy and the international competitiveness of Japanese companies have been sluggish in the past 30 years. Given this situation, METI will fundamentally review its traditional policies and discuss future ones as the "New Direction of Economic and Industrial Policies."

The committee's specific agenda is to discuss drastically reinforced measures to address socioeconomic challenges like achieving economic security and a green, digital, globalized, and inclusive society with mission-oriented, large-scale, long-term, and strategic policies, and issues regarding human resources, startups, business reforms and policy measures as a basis for Japan to stay competitive in the midst of great changes in the industrial structure.

The first meeting will be held on November 19 (Fri.).

2. Matters to be discussed and considered in the first meeting

(1) How to advance future discussions on the "New Direction of Economic and Industrial Policies"
(2) What human resource and other developments will be necessary in light of changes in the industrial structure
