February 28, 2022
In February 2022, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) generated a progress report which describes the efforts of the governments of Japan and India for improving the business environments in the Japan Industrial Townships (JITs) in India and achievements thereof. METI and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI), India, exchanged respective progress reports. The development and advancement of the JITs are expected to help further accelerate Japanese companies' investment in India.
Overview of the exchange of progress reports
In February 2022, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) generated a progress report which describes the efforts of the governments of Japan and India for improving the business environments in the Japan Industrial Townships (JITs) in India and achievements thereof. METI and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI), India, exchanged respective progress reports. This is the fifth exchange of such progress reports.
Progress in the JITs has been unstable due to the stagnation in investor sentiment caused by the pandemic.
On February 10, 2022, Ms. Sumita Dawra, Additional Secretary of MCI, and Mr. Hattori Takashi, Deputy Director-General for Trade Policy of METI, co-chaired a JITS Review Meeting in order to share the latest developments of the JITs in each state and ideas to promote investments from Japan, and to strengthen India's National Single Window System. They had a lively exchange of opinions.
It is expected that in addition to developing and advancing the JITs, utilizing the JIM and JEC projects as means of developing human resources for the manufacturing industry in India, and utilizing government support measures such as investment counseling and webinars from JETRO will further increase Japanese firms' investment activities in India.
Outline of the JITs
In September 2014, Mr. Abe Shinzo, then-Prime Minister of Japan, and H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, announced the Japan-India Investment Promotion Partnership. As part of this partnership agreement, Japan decided to develop the JITs, an industrial zone in which Japanese companies are able to smoothly start and develop business in India.
