March 17, 2022
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will establish the Study Group on Competition Policy for Realization of Green Society and hold its first meeting on March 25.
1. Purpose of the study group
European countries and the rest of the world are engaging in active discussions on how companies' efforts toward climate action and other sustainability issues should be considered in terms of competition policy.
In order to support Japan's efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, it is essential to establish competition policy measures for that purpose. For example, we must respond strictly to agreements, etc., among companies that try to unfairly restrict innovation, but at the same time, we should strongly support autonomous efforts jointly conducted by multiple companies that contribute to the transition to a carbon neutral industrial structure.
Based on that, this study group gather, organize, and share a wide range of knowledge on competition policy issues to support efforts toward achieving a green society in the country.
The first meeting will be held on March 25.
The related materials will be posted on the study group's page the day before the meeting.
