Holding the First Study Group on the Introduction and Management of Renewable Energy Generation Facilities
April 19, 2022
Joint announcement with MAFF, MLIT, and MOE
On Thursday, April 21, 2022, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), and Ministry of the Environment (MOE) will hold the first Study Group on the Introduction and Management of Renewable Energy Generation Facilities.
1. Purpose
The Japanese government is aiming for the nation to become carbon neutrality by 2050 and has set a target of a 36% to 38% switch to renewable energy by FY2030 in its Strategic Energy Plan. Achieving these ambitious goals will require progressively making renewable energy the main energy source, and an important part of that process will be to gain the trust of local communities and steadily expand the introduction of renewable energy in harmony with them.
However, as the introduction of renewable energy expands, concerns are being raised in some regions over issues such as potential disasters and environmental impacts, and how the renewable energy generation facilities will be disposed of.
To address these issues, METI, MAFF, MLIT, and MOE will hold study groups to discuss what direction measures should take to ensure that solar power and other renewable energy generation equipment are introduced and managed appropriately. The participants will include experts and practitioners from relevant fields, and the four ministries will jointly serve as the secretariat.
