2022 White Papers on Small and Medium Enterprises and Small Enterprises Released

The Small and Medium Enterprise Agency (SMEA) has compiled and hereby releases reports titled "Trends among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in FY2021" and "SME Policies in FY2022" ("2022 White Paper on Small and Medium Enterprises in Japan"), as well as "Trends among Small Enterprises in FY2021" and "Small Enterprise Policies in FY2022" ("2022 White Paper on Small Enterprises in Japan"), on which a Cabinet Decision was made on April 26, 2022.

Note: The "Small enterprises" covered by the White Paper on Small Enterprises in Japan are enterprises with a workforce of 20 or fewer workers (five or fewer workers in the case of commercial trade and services industries) who are employed on a mostly regular basis as defined under Article 2, Paragraph 1 of the Basic Act for Promoting Small Enterprises. In the text of the report, "small enterprises" are referred to as "small businesses" so that readers can easily understand that the term "small enterprises" includes all categories of companies with 20 or fewer workers.

The 2022 White Papers analyze trends among SMEs and small businesses, which are facing various challenges including the spread of COVID-19, crude oil and raw material price hikes, and other external influences. They also analyze initiatives that these businesses must implement in order to take on new challenges and transform themselves. Additionally, they touch on examples of businesses whose activities exemplify the aforementioned points.
