Minister Hagiuda Holds Meeting with H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Group CEO and Managing Director of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, UAE

On June 7 (Tue.), Mr. Hagiuda Koichi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Group CEO and Managing Director of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), who was visiting Japan, to discuss strengthening relations in the fields of clean energy and advanced technology, and to encouraged him to work toward stability in the international crude oil market. After the meeting, the two ministers attended the signing ceremony for a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) on clean hydrogen production between Mitsui & Co., ENEOS, and ADNOC, and welcomed the concrete progress in cooperation between the two countries in the field of clean energy.
During the meeting, Minister Hagiuda expressed his gratitude for the stable supply of crude oil to Japan and called for cooperation toward stabilizing the international crude oil market by ensuring an ample supply—including through increased production—and investing in production capacity. In addition, he confirmed the need to facilitate a balanced energy transition to respond to climate change while ensuring sufficient energy security, as the situation in Ukraine had heightened the importance of a stable energy supply. The two ministers also agreed to deepen cooperation between their countries in new fields such as clean energy and advanced technology, as well as oil and gas.
After the meeting, the two ministers attended a signing ceremony for a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) on clean hydrogen production* between Mitsui & Co., ENEOS, and ADNOC. Concrete achievement of this project is expected to accelerate bilateral cooperation in the field of clean energy in the future.
- Mitsui & Co., ENEOS and ADNOC will study the commercial feasibility of blue hydrogen production in the TA'ZIZ area of the Ruwais Industrial Complex in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and its export to Japan using MCH (methylcyclohexane). They plan to recover CO2 generated during hydrogen production and use it for EOR (enhanced oil recovery).
- The purpose of this JSA is to confirm among the parties the roles and promotion system for each company for conducting the joint study.
