Revision of the Window Performance Labeling System to Make Homes More Energy-Efficient in 2030

June 20, 2022

A council under the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy has compiled a report on the window performance labeling system.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is providing information to consumers about the quality of window insulation through the window performance labeling system. On the other hand, towards carbon neutral by 2050, it is necessary to make homes more energy-efficient in 2030. To that end, the council1 established at the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy deliberated revision of the system, and today, compiled a report on the new system.
Taking account of the recently improved Building Material Top Runner Program for windows2 and the revisions of JIS A 4706 that previous labeling systems referred to, the new window performance labeling system was amended to be able to rate windows that have greater insulation performance. At the same time, in order to further improve the energy efficiency of homes, the new system introduces the indicator of solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), which will serve as a reference for appropriately controlling solar heat gain and shielding.
The labeling system will be implemented starting next fiscal year after making necessary preparations, including revising relevant regulations and developing guidance materials for general consumers.
