On November 14, 2022, Mr. Nishimura, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a meeting with Ms. Madeleine King, Australia's Minister for Resources and Minister for Northern Australia.
At the meeting, Minister Nishimura expressed his respect for Minister King's efforts to ensure a stable supply of coal and LNG. In particular, he expressed his gratitude for Minister King's efforts to prevent the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism (ADGSM)—which would impose export controls on LNG—from being activated next year. Minister King stated that even if the mechanism was activated, it still would not affect their long-term contract.
They also discussed the future direction for further cooperation between Japan and Australia in the field of mineral resources based on agreements such as the Partnership Concerning Critical Minerals, which was signed during Prime Minister Kishida's visit to Australia in October.
In addition, both ministers confirmed the direction they will take to realize the Asia Zero Emissions Community (AZEC) vision and effectively progress energy transitions together with Australia and the ASEAN countries.
