Administrative Arrangement to Facilitate Reciprocal Sharing and Utilization of Satellite Data Signed with the Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space of the European Commission

On January 17 (Tue.), at the Fifth Meeting of the Japan-EU Space Policy Dialogue held in Brussels, Belgium, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space of the European Commission signed an Administrative Arrangement to exchange satellite data between Japanese and EU satellite data platforms and accelerate satellite data utilization .
1. Overview
On Tuesday, January 17, at the Fifth Meeting of the Japan-EU Space Policy Dialogue held in Brussels, Belgium, METI and the Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space of the European Commission signed an Administrative Arrangement to exchange satellite data between Japanese and EU satellite data platforms and accelerate satellite data utilization .
This Arrangement is expected to increase the amount of satellite data in both Japan and Europe and further promote its use.
2. Highlights of the cooperation
- Exchange data between the satellite data platform Tellus and the European Commission-operated Copernicus.
- Encourage cooperation on data processing for common use and development of services in fields such as monitoring of marine and coastal areas, climate, water resource management, and disaster risk reduction.
3. In the future
Japan and the EU will proceed with discussions toward signing the Technical Operating Arrangements in order to achieve the cooperation outlined in the Arrangement.
