The Sports Future Development Conference was co-hosted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan Sports Agency in 2016 and included discussions on policy directions and other matters in the Japanese sports industry. There were major changes in the environment after the conference, such as the spread of COVID-19 and rapid development of DX. Therefore, we will resume the Sports Future Development Conference together with the Japan Sports Agency in order to discuss concrete measures to further grow the Japanese sports industry in 2025 and beyond 2030.
1. Purpose and Background
Against the backdrop of increased consumption, willingness to invest, and interest in Japan from abroad increasing in preparation of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games (hereinafter referred to as the "Tokyo Games"), METI and the Japan Sports Agency held the Sports Future Development Conference in 2015 to discuss policy directions to advance future strategic efforts in Japanese sports businesses.
Based on the discussions, we implemented measures such as renovating stadiums and arenas and promoting open innovation in sports. Since the Tokyo Games, there have been major changes in the environment that were not predicted at the time of the conference, including the spread of COVID-19 and rapid development of DX.
Therefore, we will hold the Sports Future Development Conference again with the aim of discussing concrete measures to further grow the Japanese sports industry in 2025 and beyond 2030 and compiling the Sports Industry Vision (tentative name).
