On Wednesday, April 19, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Nishimura held a meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai during her visit to Japan.
In the meeting, both leaders welcomed the conclusion of the Agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of the United States on Strengthening Critical Minerals Supply Chains which was signed last month. Minister Nishimura emphasized that Japan, which is treated as an FTA country regarding EV tax credits under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), will contribute to strengthening the supply chain of clean vehicles and batteries in the two countries. He again conveyed Japan's thoughts on the IRA’s final assembly requirement of eligible vehicles in North America to qualify for the tax credits.
In addition, the two principals exchanged views on a wide range of topics including the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF); Japan-US cooperation on business and human rights based on the Memorandum of Cooperation on the Japan-U.S. Task Force on the Promotion of Human Rights and International Labor Standards in Supply Chains signed in January this year; the APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) meeting in Detroit, U.S., in May; and the G7 Trade Ministerial Meeting in Sakai, Osaka, Japan, in October.
