- Dispatch of the Delegation of Republic of Korea (ROK) Experts on the Current Status of Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) Treated Water at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) (from May 22 to 25)
Dispatch of the Delegation of Republic of Korea (ROK) Experts on the Current Status of Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) Treated Water at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) (from May 22 to 25)
May 25, 2023
On May 22, a briefing session was held in Tokyo for the Delegation of ROK experts. On May 23 and 24, the Delegation of Korean experts visited TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) to observe a series of facilities (Measurement/confirmation facility, Transfer facility, Discharge facility, etc.) related to the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea. In addition, a comprehensive briefing and Q&A session was held on May 25.
The Japanese side explained the schedule and the details for the visit to TEPCO's FDNPS. Based on the prepared materials and data, there were questions and answers in order to deepen the understanding of the Korean side.
2. On May 23, the Delegation headed by Mr. YOO, GUKHEE, Chairperson of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission and approximately 20 experts, visited TEPCO's FDNPS to observe facilities (Supervisory facility, 3 types of ALPS facility, Storage tank, Transfer facility, etc.). There were also questions and answers about details and operation of each facility.
3. On May 24, the Delegation consists of Mr. YOO, GUKHEE, Chairperson of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission and approximately 20 experts, visited TEPCO's FDNPS to observe the facility related to the analysis of radionuclides and the dilution and discharge facilities including emergency shutoff value. There were also questions and answers about details and operation of each facility.
4. On May 25, the Delegation headed by Mr. YOO, GUKHEE, Chairperson of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, participated in a comprehensive summary briefing session in Tokyo.
5. The government of Japan will continue to disseminate information in a highly transparent manner and work to foster understanding in the international community, including the visit to the TEPCO's FDNPS.
[Note] The purpose of this visit is to deepen understanding of the safety of ALPS-treated water discharged into the sea in Korea.
Main Facilities Observed
Additional ALPS (Advanced Liquid Processing System)
ALPS Treated Water Transfer Facility (Emergency isolation valve)
ALPS Treated Water Transfer Facility (Treated water transfer pump exit radiation monitor)
ALPS Treated Water Transfer Facility (Treated water transfer pump exit radiation monitor)
[Reference] ALPS treated water is water which is processed by devices such as ALPS (Advanced Liquid Processing System) to ensure that the radioactive materials other than tritium surely meet the regulatory standards for safety. In addition, it is planned that ALPS treated water will then be sufficiently diluted before the discharges so that the concentrations of the radioactive materials including tritium will be far below the regulatory standards for safety.
