Minister Nishimura Holds a Video Conference with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

On August 25, 2023, Mr. Nishimura Yasutoshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a video conference with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Minister Nishimura explained that the ALPS treated water discharge into the sea has started, and that the first monitoring results after the discharge had been obtained, and both sides have agreed to continue to closely work together over the long term after the commencement of ALPS treated water discharge into the sea.
On August 25, 2023, Minister Nishimura held a video conference with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, IAEA Director General. The minister expressed his gratitude for the IAEA’s activities to date regarding the ALPS treated water safety review and for the witness and independent monitoring by IAEA personnel stationed at Fukushima after the discharge has started, and for its continued review of the safety of discharge into the sea. The minister stated that Japanese government continues to respond firmly to any additional IAEA reviews and IAEA involvement for the monitoring.
Furthermore, Minister Nishimura reiterated his request for continuous dissemination of information by the IAEA and confirmed the importance of prompt and accurate dissemination of information on the results of monitoring.
In addition, Minister Nishimura stated that the Japanese government will continue to take responsibility until the completion of decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, and requested continued support from the IAEA in ensuring the safety of the ALPS treated water over the long term.
