On September 5 (Tue.), 2023, Mr. Nishimura Yasutoshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited the Republic of Turkey.

Minister Nishimura held individual meetings with each of H.E. Dr. Ömer Bolat, Minister of Trade, and H.E. Dr. Alparslan Bayraktar, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. Following each meeting, the two sides signed a joint statement. In addition, Minister Nishimura delivered an address at a JETRO-hosted business forum that brought together over 250 participants.

1. Meeting with Minister Barkat (September 5)

The two ministers held discussions on certain issues, including expectations for enhanced trade ties between Japan and Turkey, future directions for supporting recovery from the earthquake that occurred in Turkey in February 2023, cooperation in third countries, for example in Africa, the recovery of Ukraine, and acceleration of negotiations for a Japan-Turkey EPA. Moreover, following the meeting, the ministers signed a joint statement on the promotion of trade and investment and the enhancement of economic ties between Japan and Turkey.

2. Meeting with Minister Bayraktar (September 5)

The two ministers focused on a variety of energy fields and confirmed that Japan and Turkey will advance cooperation in promoting business between the two countries. Moreover, following the meeting, the ministers signed a joint statement on cooperation on the launch of a Japan-Turkey energy forum.

3. JETRO-hosted business forum (September 5)

JETRO and the Ministry of Trade of Turkey jointly held a business forum, taking advantage of the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the JETRO Istanbul Office. Minister Nishimura delivered an address at the beginning of the forum in front of over 250 business stakeholder participants from Japan and Turkey explaining Japan’s expectations for enriching ongoing cooperative ties between Japan and Turkey.
