METI Minister Nishimura Signs Memorandum of Cooperation on Industrial Science and Technology with Canada

On September 21, 2023, Mr. Nishimura Yasutoshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, signed a memorandum of cooperation on industrial science and technology, together with H.E. Mr. François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, and H.E. Ms. Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, Canada, together with Mr. Yamanouchi Kanji, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Canada, Japan.
1. Overview
On September 21 (Thur.), 2023, Minister Nishimura signed a memorandum of cooperation on industrial science and technology, together with Minister Champagne, Minister Ng, and Ambassador Yamanouchi. Inspired by the conclusion of this MOC, Japan will strive to further accelerate cooperation with Canada in the field of industrial science and technology.
2. Key points of the MOC
With the growing importance of economic security, METI and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Department of Industry and the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development of Canada agreed on the following actions to promote the cooperation between parties in the field of industrial science and technology: [i] advanced manufacturing, [ii] artificial Intelligence (AI), [iii] clean technology, clean energy and carbon reduction technologies, [iv] life sciences, [v] quantum, [vi] semiconductors, and other areas.
- Collaborating to identify joint research startups between Japan and Canada through grants or matching schemes;
- Promoting joint research and development activities between Japan and Canada by utilizing the Global Research and Development Center for Business by Quantum-AI technology (G-QuAT) in the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), etc.;
- Strengthening collaboration by promoting joint research among research institutes and companies in Japan and Canada for the exchange and development of human resources and utilizing international conferences, workshops, and seminars;
- Supporting effective standards setting relevant to industrial science and technology through information sharing, etc.;
- Pursuing cooperative projects through the newly established Japan-Canada Industrial R&D Policy Dialogue; etc.
