September 22, 2023
From the perspective of accelerating the development of generative AI, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has deliberated a scheme to support companies and other organizations that are developing competitive foundation model. Now that the overall framework of the support scheme has been determined, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) intends to publicly call for companies and other organizations developing foundation model from late October (according to the current schedule). Before that, METI will conduct a preliminary survey for smoothly carrying out procedures for public invitation and adoption.
1. Outline
Generative AI is an innovative technology that is expected to improve accessibility to information, eliminate labor shortages, enhance productivity and otherwise solve various social problems, with the potential to exert a significant impact on industrial activities and people's lives.
As generative AI is actively developed worldwide, rapid progress is being made on the development of foundation model, the core technology of generative AI. It is important also for Japan to secure the ability to develop foundation model. From the perspective of accelerating the development of generative AI, METI established an expert panel and has had deliberations on a scheme to support companies and other organizations that are developing competitive foundation model.
The overall framework of the support scheme was determined based on the deliberations by the expert panel. Accordingly, NEDO is to publicly call for companies developing foundation model that is to be supported under the scheme from late October (according to the current schedule). Before that, METI will conduct a preliminary survey for smoothly carrying out procedures for public invitation and adoption.
Participation in the preliminary survey is not a requirement for applying for the support scheme (companies and other organizations may be chosen for support despite not having taken part in the preliminary survey).
For the details of the public invitation and the support scheme, check the application guidelines and other information to be published by NEDO.
