Launch of Nuclear Supply Chain Platform Website
September 29, 2023
On September 29, 2023, the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE) under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. (JAIF) jointly launched a website for the Nuclear Supply Chain Platform (NSCP) for the purpose of maintaining and enhancing nuclear supply chains.
1. Background
For many nuclear power stations that have been in operation since 1970 in Japan, related technologies are concentrated in domestic companies, as seen in the fact that the domestic production ratio of nuclear technology exceeds almost 90%. This shows the contributions these companies make to such matters as the stable use of nuclear power stations, the economy, and employment in Japan. However, since the Great East Japan Earthquake, delay in the restart of operations of nuclear power stations and the disruption of projects for building new ones have been causing domestic companies in this field to lose business prospects for the future, while core suppliers and other companies that have underlying technologies have been pulling out of the field one after another.
In light of this situation, on March 6, 2023, ANRE, in collaboration with regional bureaus of economy, trade and industry, the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. (JAIF), and other related organizations took the opportunity of convening a Nuclear Supply Chain Symposium to establish the Nuclear Supply Chain Platform (NSCP).
2. Details of the website
On September 29, 2023, as part of the efforts for enhancing the system for supporting nuclear supply chains, ANRE and JAIF jointly launched an NSCP website.
On the website, ANRE and JAIF will explain case examples of companies’ efforts to maintain and enhance human resources and technologies, as well as subsidies and taxation systems, and also will develop content on the website concerning nuclear supply chains, including information provision for helping companies to participate in overseas construction projects.
ANRE will continue to provide support for nuclear supply chains as a whole, including [i] strategic development and securing of human resources in the field of nuclear energy, [ii] countermeasures against supply disruptions of parts and raw materials as well as business succession, and [iii] support for helping companies to participate in overseas projects. Moreover, it will provide proactive, tailor-made, ongoing support to about 400 nuclear-related companies across Japan.
