METI State Minister Iwata Visits the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

From Sunday, October 1, to Wednesday, October 4, 2023, Mr. Iwata Kazuchika, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In the UAE, he attended the opening ceremony for the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) and held meetings with each of H.E. Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, and H.E. Mr. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, of the country.
1. Attending ADIPEC
State Minister Iwata attended the opening ceremony for ADIPEC, an event positioned as one of the world’s largest exhibitions and conferences in the petroleum and natural gas industries, together with government ministers of the UAE, government dignitaries of other countries and top executives of international oil companies.
In addition, he visited the Japan Pavilion, which exhibited Japan's advanced decarbonization technologies, including those for production, transportation, and utilization of hydrogen and ammonia, and display booths showcased by the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and other Japanese companies. Also, he exchanged views with stakeholders and other members of the companies concerning businesses in Abu Dhabi, future directions of business development, the current situation of energy markets, including those of decarbonization, and other issues.

2. Meetings with dignitaries of the UAE government
(1) Meeting with Minister Zeyoudi
State Minister Iwata stated that Japan intends commit to the further development of Japan-UAE economic ties under the Japan-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI), a Japan-UAE cooperation framework. In addition, the two sides confirmed cooperation in a variety of fields, including hydrogen and other clean energy, in order to realize energy transition.
(2) Meeting with Minister Mazrouei
The two sides confirmed cooperation in the fields of clean energy and advanced decarbonization technologies as an effort for realizing the Global Green Energy Hub, which is a concept to make the Middle East region a hub for clean energy and decarbonization initiatives. In addition, State Minister Iwata expressed Japan’s appreciation for UAE’s stable supply of crude oil to Japan and encouraged cooperation in stabilizing international crude oil markets in light of the recent rise in crude oil prices.
3. Other activity
State Minister Iwata visited Sweihan Solar Power Plant, a facility with the world’s largest-class capacity of power generation in terms of a single solar power plant, which is funded by a Japanese company.
