Leaders Session of the 5th RD20 Conference Held

October 6, 2023

On Thursday, October 5, the Leaders Session of the 5th RD20 (Research and Development 20 for Clean Energy Technologies) Conference was held in Koriyama City, Fukushima. Hosted by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), leaders of clean energy research institutes in 19 countries and region, including Japan, participated and discussed the status of the year-round initiatives of RD20 for further strengthening international collaboration among research institutes, and future expansion of RD20 activities toward creating innovation for decarbonization.

Overview of the conference

Launched by Japan in 2019, RD20 (Research and Development 20 for Clean Energy Technologies) is an international conference where leaders from G20 research institutes involved in clean energy technology gather to further research and development through international cooperation, with the aim of decarbonizing society. For the 5th RD20 Conference, the Technical Session was held on Wednesday, October 4, and the Leaders Session was held on Thursday, October 5.

The Leaders Session was held as part of Tokyo GX Week, which is an intensive series of international conferences related to energy and the environment, held with a view toward achieving GX (green transformation).

Mr. IWATA Kazuchika, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, delivered a welcome address at the meeting, in which he outlined Japan's efforts to develop legal systems for achieving GX, along with financial and other measures for promoting GX, and expressed his expectation that international collaboration strengthened by RD20 will continue to contribute to addressing global environmental problems.

After the welcome address by the State Minister, leaders of the 22 research institutes in 19 countries and region, including Japan, participated in discussions chaired by Mr. Ishimura, President and CEO of AIST. Reports were given regarding achievements, including summer schools for internationally promoting the fostering of young researchers, as well as international workshops for discussing technologies and systems necessary for the large-scale introduction of hydrogen, both of which were conducted based on the Leaders Recommendations adopted at the previous 4th RD20 Conference. Participants also discussed recommended activities such as initiatives for the next fiscal year. The outcomes of the discussions, such as the creation of an RD20 researcher exchange program, were summarized as recommendations.
