State Minister Iwata Holds a Conference with Ms. Lydie Evrard, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

On October 19, 2023, Mr. Iwata Kazuchika, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a conference with Ms. Lydie Evrard, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). State Minister Iwata appreciated the IAEA review on the safety of ALPS treated water, and independent monitoring by the IAEA. Ms. Lydie Evrard, stated that the IAEA will continue to be firmly involved in ensuring the safety of discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea and the discharge is currently proceeding without any problem at all. Both sides confirmed that the IAEA review and monitoring activities by IAEA on-site office will be continued, and they will work closely together over the long term.

State Minister Iwata appreciated the IAEA review on the safety of ALPS treated water and independent monitoring by the IAEA. State Minister Iwata confirmed that Japan will continue to work closely with the IAEA over the long term. Ms. Lydie Evrard, stated that the IAEA will continue to be firmly involved in ensuring the safety of discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea and the discharge is currently proceeding without any problem at all.
Both sides reaffirmed the importance of continuing review and the monitoring activities by IAEA on-site office to ensure that ALPS treated water will be discharged to the sea in consistent with international safety standards during and after the discharge into the sea for a long time.
