Splash of cleaning water onto workers at additional ALPS building in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station
October 25, 2023
Today, cleaning water was splashed onto workers at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), during the cleaning of pipes used to transfer contaminated water undergoing purification treatment- at additional ALPS building. METI has instructed TEPCO to take all possible measures to ensure safety.
Today, on October 25, In the additional ALPS building of TEPCO's FDNPS, five workers who were cleaning the piping used to transfer contaminated water that was in the process of being purified were splashed with piping cleaning water or mist.
As a result of naris examination, no internal uptake was observed in any of the workers. Out of those workers, for one worker, no body contamination was confirmed. Two of the four body contaminated workers have been decontaminated to below the evacuation criteria from the controlled area, but two of them have been transported to Fukushima Medical University Hospital because it was judged that decontamination of body in FDNPS to below the criteria for leaving the controlled area is difficult. The diagnosis of the medical doctor at emergency medical care is that it is unlikely that the burns due to radiation injury has developed.
METI has instructed TEPCO to take all possible measures to ensure safety of decommissioning work, including the safety of workers, as well as to thoroughly prevent recurrence.
We will continue to provide information on this matter, including to IAEA, in a highly transparent manner.
