METI Minister Nishimura Visits Hanoi, Viet Nam

On Friday, November 3, 2023, Mr. Nishimura Yasutoshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited Hanoi, Viet Nam, and held the sixth meeting of the Japan-Viet Nam Joint Committee on Cooperation in Industry, Trade and Energy in co-chairmanship with H.E. Mr. Nguyen Hong Dien, Minister of Industry and Trade, Viet Nam. In addition, Minister Nishimura participated in an event for startups called Inno Vietnam-Japan Fast Track Pitch 2023. Moreover, he held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Nguyen Chi Dung, Minister of Planning and Investment, and also paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Pham Minh Chinh, Prime Minister, Viet Nam.

1. Sixth meeting of the Japan-Viet Nam Joint Committee on Cooperation in Industry, Trade and Energy

The sixth meeting of the Japan-Viet Nam Joint Committee on Cooperation in Industry, Trade and Energy was held under the co-chairmanship of Minister Nishimura and Minister Dien. The committee has held discussions on a variety of cooperation initiatives in the fields of industry, trade, and energy at the ministerial level. At this meeting of the committee, ministers agreed to establish a working group to develop future oriented co-creation projects and strengthen supply chain resilience. They also held discussions on cooperation on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), realization of energy transition through the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), cooperation on rare earths, and other issues, and confirmed that Japan and Viet Nam will further fortify bilateral efforts. Furthermore, Japan expressed its hope that Viet Nam will expand imports and consumption of Japanese marine products.

During the committee, Minister Nishimura witnessed the exchange of MOUs between private companies (KDDI Viet Nam Corporation and FPT Software; and Aureole Construction Software Development Inc. (ACSD) and Mien Tay Construction University).

Furthermore, the two sides issued a joint ministerial statement and a fact sheet.

2. Participating in Inno Vietnam-Japan Fast Track Pitch 2023

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) jointly held Inno Vietnam-Japan Fast Track Pitch 2023 in collaboration with the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), National Innovation Center (NIC), and other organizations of Viet Nam. Minister Nishimura participated in this event together with Minister Dung. During his speech, Minister Nishimura conveyed the importance of promoting co-creation between Viet Nam and Japan to create innovation between the two countries, triggered by the commemoration of the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation as well as the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Viet Nam-Japan diplomatic ties. Also, he exchanged views with representatives of Japanese startups, and challenge owners.

3. Meeting with Minister Dung

In the meeting with Minister Dung, the two sides exchanged views on the creation of industries of future leading players, the acceleration of innovation, including partnership activities with startups, e.g., the Fast Track Pitch event mentioned above, cooperation related to energy, e.g., AZEC, and other issues. Following this, they confirmed that Japan and Viet Nam will advance bilateral efforts.

Moreover, at the venue of the Fast Track Pitch event, Minister Nishimura, together with Minister Dung, visited an exhibition of Japanese fishery products displayed by JETRO, and he encouraged Viet Nam to expand consumption of these products.

4. Paying a courtesy call on Prime Minister Chinh

During the courtesy call on Prime Minister Chinh, the two sides exchanged views on the creation of industries of future leading players, building of resilient supply chains, cooperation regarding IPEF, energy and other related areas such as AZEC, and on rare earths, together with other issues. They confirmed that Japan and Viet Nam will advance their bilateral efforts. Moreover, Japan expressed its hope that Viet Nam will expand imports and consumption of Japanese marine products.
