METI State Minister Iwata Visits Ukraine and Poland

On Monday, November 20, 2023, Mr. Iwata Kazuchika, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Mr. Tsuji Kiyoto, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, visited Ukraine. They exchanged views with representatives of the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and held a business matching meeting between accompanying Japanese companies and Ukrainian companies. In addition, they attended a handover ceremony of landmine detectors and other equipment, and held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Oleksandr Bankov, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Moreover, on Tuesday, November 21, State Minister Iwata visited Poland and attended a business matching meeting between Japanese companies and Polish companies.

1. Exchanging views with representatives of the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and holding a business matching meeting

Together with the representatives of accompanying Japanese companies, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Iwata and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Tsuji exchanged views with the representatives of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Federation of Employers of Ukraine.

Following this, a business matching meeting was held between Japanese and Ukrainian business representatives, and participants exchanged proactive views on cooperation between companies from the two countries for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

2. Other activities in Ukraine

State Ministers Iwata and Tsuji attended a handover ceremony of landmine detectors and other equipment. Vice-Minister Tsuji stated that the clearance of landmines in Ukraine is one of the priorities in its recovery and reconstruction and that the Government of Japan hopes that its support will contribute to this effort. The Government of Ukraine expressed its deep gratitude for Japan's assistance to Ukraine.

Following this, State Ministers Iwata and Tsuji held a meeting with State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Bankov. The two sides exchanged views on efforts in response to the Russian aggression against Ukraine and also confirmed that Japan will cooperate in future processes for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

3. Business matching meeting between Japanese companies and Polish companies

After leaving Ukraine, State Minister Iwata visited Warsaw, Poland. He attended a business matching meeting, an occasion to support Ukraine organized by the Poland Office of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and delivered an address. He stated the importance of providing support to Ukraine with collaboration between Japanese and Polish companies and showed Japan’s expectations therefor. Dr. Paweł Kurtasz, Chairman of the Board, Polish Trade and Investment Agency, delivered his remarks, stressing the need for further provision of support to Ukraine through the realization of collaboration between Japanese and Polish companies. Following this, representatives of participating Japanese and Polish companies held presentations and exchanged views toward future cooperation and collaboration.
