G7 Digital & Tech Ministers’ Meeting Held

On December 1 (Fri.), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Digital Agency and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, jointly held the G7 Digital & Tech Ministerial Meeting via videoconference. The G7 members, as well as relevant international organizations participated in the meeting and discussed the Hiroshima AI Process (chair: Mr. Suzuki Junji, Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications) and the DFFT (chair: Mr. Kono Taro, Minister for Digital Transformation). Hiroshima AI Process G7 Digital & Tech Ministers’ Statement and G7 Digital & Tech Ministers’ Statement on Operationalisation of Data Free Flow with Trust were adopted as deliverables of this meeting.

Based on the results of the G7 Hiroshima Summit held in May 2023, the Hiroshima AI Process was launched in May 2023 with the participation of G7 members and relevant international organizations, to discuss about Generative AI, whose rapid development and promotion presents the important challenges for the entire international community.
Discussions took place were among the ministers in charge of digital affairs (Chair: Mr. Suzuki Junji, Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications) to compile of the outcomes of Hiroshima AI Process this year. As a result of the discussions, the "Hiroshima AI Process G7 Digital &Tech Ministers’ Statement" was adopted as a deliverable of this meeting.
 
At this meeting, Mr. Nishimura Yasutoshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry made the following statement;
- It is important to secure a balance between innovation and discipline of AI. As a tool in this regard, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is, together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, working on developing AI guidelines for business actors. 
- As AI rulemaking is in the process simultaneously in various countries, Japan intends to promote cooperation to improve interoperability of AI governance frameworks among countries including the US, to ensure an that AI business actors can facilitates cross-border activities with ease.
- In order to make innovation happen, Japan is committed to support to strengthen AI development capabilities with all strength of public and private sectors.
