Japan-Korea Director-General Meeting Held in the Field of Hydrogen and Derivatives, Including Ammonia

On February 15, 2024, Mr. Inoue Hiroo, Director-General, Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Department, Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, METI, and Mr. Chan Ki Park, Director-General, Hydrogen Economy Policy Bureau, MOTIE, held a Director-General-level meeting to discuss topics related to hydrogen and its derivatives such as ammonia, at METI, Tokyo.
In this meeting, the two sides shared policy trends, especially in the areas of hydrogen and ammonia, and exchanged views on the efforts and challenges in both countries as they work towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The outcomes of the meeting are summarized as follows:
- Both sides reaffirmed the significance of clean hydrogen and its derivatives such as ammonia in achieving their respective Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), and shared the view of the strong potential for cooperation between the two countries as they face similar challenges in pursuing their hydrogen strategies.
- Both sides confirmed that they would enhance cooperation on the areas such as (1) developing a global supply chain and creating fields of utilization, (2) collaboration on codes and standards, and (3) sharing of knowledge and experience obtained from policies.
- Both sides agreed to continue discussion and to set up a 'Japan-Korea Hydrogen and its derivatives such as ammonia Cooperation Dialogue' framework with a view to facilitating mutual communication and cooperation.
