Minister Saito Holds Meeting with WIPO Director General Tang

On Wednesday, February 21, Mr. Saito Ken, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a meeting with Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) *1. They reached a consensus on mutual cooperation in supporting SMEs and start-ups within developing countries in the field of intellectual property through the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT Japan IP Global)*2, the dissemination of GX technology through WIPO GREEN*3, and the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.

Overview

On Wednesday, February 21, Minister Saito held a meeting with Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of WIPO.
During the meeting, they noted their shared understanding that WIPO and Japan are expanding cooperation in various fields. These include support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups, the dissemination of GX technology through WIPO GREEN, and the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. They also both recognized the importance of WIPO’s presence for Japanese industry, as well as the importance of further deepening the cooperative relationship between Japan and WIPO.

Minister Saito welcomed the signing of the cooperation statement by the Japan Patent Office and WIPO. This statement strengthens support for SMEs and start-ups in developing countries in the field of intellectual property through the FIT Japan IP Global. Japan makes voluntary contributions to WIPO for this initiative. Minister Saito also reaffirmed bilateral cooperation between Japan and WIPO regarding this support.

Minister Saito and Director Tang also shared the view that Japan and WIPO will strengthen cooperation more than ever for WIPO GREEN initiatives, and for the success of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.
