Minister Saito Holds Meeting with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

On March 12, 2024, Mr. Saito Ken, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). During the meeting, both sides discussed the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea and the IAEA review on the safety of the ALPS treated water.
On March 12, 2024, Minister Saito held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, IAEA Director General.
Minister Saito expressed his gratitude to the IAEA for stationing its staff at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station since the start of the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea last August, and for its continued independent monitoring activity and the safety review. He also stated that the Government of Japan will continue to take all possible measures to ensure the safety of ALPS treated water over the long term, responding firmly to any additional IAEA reviews and the monitoring by IAEA.
Minister Saito reiterated his request for the IAEA’s continued monitoring activities from an independent standpoint and the dissemination of the results of the monitoring in a transparent manner. Both sides agreed on the importance of the dissemination of information based on scientific evidence and the implementation of long-term, continuous reviews by the IAEA.
In addition, Minister Saito expressed his gratitude for the dispatch of the IAEA Expert Mission to TEPCO's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant and government's willingness to cooperate with the mission, as well as his thanks for attending the Nuclear Supply Chain Symposium scheduled for March 14.
