From FY2024, 179 Companies Newly Participate in the GX League, Bringing the Total Number of Participants to 747

March 27, 2024

On February 1, 2022, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) released the “GX League Basic Concept,” and the GX League was launched in FY2023. METI hereby announces that 179 companies will newly participate in the league from FY2024. The GX League will continue to drive Japan’s GX (green transformation) by working as a framework covering over 50% of the greenhouse gas emissions in Japan.

1. Outline of the GX League

The GX League is a framework in which a group of internationally competitive companies that are boldly taking on the challenge of transitioning to carbon neutrality will drive GX. As of FY2023, 568 companies have participated in the league.

These companies have been making significant efforts to reduce emissions, upholding their own targets of emission reductions not only for FY2030 but also for FY2025, and have also decided to participate in an emissions trading system currently being operated on a trial basis. Moreover, active discussions on and proposals for rulemaking, which is difficult for individual companies to undertake, have been held regarding areas such as emissions reductions throughout the supply chain and the input of green products into the market.

2. New participants from FY2024

In January 2024, the GX League opened a call for new companies that intend to participate in the league from FY2024 and received applications. As a result, 179 companies newly decided to participate in the league from FY2024, bringing the total number of participants to 747.

From FY2024, these companies from a wide variety of industries, including the transport industry (including air transport, railway transport, and land transport), manufacturing industry (e.g., semiconductors), real estate industry, and information and communications industry, will join the league.

The GX League will continue to drive Japan’s GX by working as a framework covering over 50% of the greenhouse gas emissions in Japan.

3. Supporting participants that have yet to submit their data

The GX League asks participants to register related data such as their emissions reduction targets. However, some participants from FY2023 have not yet registered their data for a variety of reasons. To address this situation, the GX League has opened a special consultation counter on its official website as a measure to support such companies in registering their data, which provides services such as tailored consultations, including explanations on how to calculate emissions.

The GX League will continue to provide meticulous support to participating companies, which vary in size and by industry, consisting of not only large enterprises but also SMEs and startups, so that these participants will be able to advance their efforts through the activities offered by the league.

For details, visit the special webpage on the GX League official website.

Note: The GX League will consider companies that have no intention to register their data and those that do not respond to the communications from the Secretariat as having withdrawn from the league as of the end of June 2024.
