FY2023 Measures to Promote Manufacturing Technology (White Paper on Manufacturing Industries 2024) Released
May 31, 2024
The FY2023 Measures to Promote Manufacturing Technology (White Paper on Manufacturing Industries 2024) is a report on measures that the Government of Japan has taken to promote core manufacturing technologies. It was compiled pursuant to Article 8 of the Basic Act on the Promotion of Core Manufacturing Technology (Act No. 2 of 1999).
This report was jointly prepared by three ministries, namely, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). It was approved by the Cabinet on May 31, 2024.
1. Characteristics of the White Paper on Manufacturing Industries 2024
The White Paper on Manufacturing Industries 2024 shows an overview of recent trends in the manufacturing industry, including business conditions, trends in employment, and research and development, based on the statistical data and questionnaire results. Additionally, it organizes and analyzes challenges seen in important themes, including corporate transformation (CX) and digital transformation (DX), for strengthening the competitiveness of Japan's manufacturing industry.
2. Key points of the White Paper on Manufacturing Industries 2024
The manufacturing industry in Japan has been facing not only the growing importance of domestic investment but also a recent shift to a structure in which the industry earns a majority of sales in overseas markets. Nevertheless, it does not have a management system in place that is suitable for its wide-ranging business development on a global scale. As a result, its profit ratios remain low and its DX is also limited to improvements in individual processes, and this indicates the industry’s current status in which its endeavors do not contribute to improving earning power.
To overcome the current status and further improve earning power, the manufacturing industry in Japan needs to work on certain efforts, such as building a management and organizational system suitable for global business activities through CX, and totally optimizing the manufacturing functions and expanding business opportunities through DX. The White Paper on Manufacturing Industries 2024 shows challenges that companies may face in promoting these efforts and case examples of leading manufacturers that have dealt with such challenges.
